HOLIDAY LIGHTING SAFETY
As we remind everyone this time of year, the winter holiday season can be a
time of increased fire risks from electrical lighting and Christmas trees.
Last year we focused on
hazards associated with live trees
. That page includes a video of a tree fire and was viewed by hundreds last
season.
This year we'd like to remind everyone there are also many dangers
associated with Christmas lighting.
To reduce risks involved with holdiay lighting, please follow these guidelines:
- Inspect NEW and previously USED light strings before use each season and replace damaged items.
- Use lights and electrical decorations bearing the name of an independent testing lab, and always follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation and maintenance.
- Ensure all electric lights and connections are secure.
- Never mount lighting in any way that can damage the cord's wire insulation.
- Hang outdoor lights with the bulb pointing down to prevent moisture from entering the sockets.
- Always unplug lights to replace bulbs or fuses.
- Do not overload extension cords. Do not run cords in areas where they may become damaged or cause hazards (walk-ways, doors, etc.).
- Keep children and pets away from light strings and electrical decorations and turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed.
- Choose holiday decorations made with flame-resistant, flame-retardant or non-combustible materials.
- Keep candles away from decorations and other combustible materials, never use candles to decorate Christmas trees.
- Never leave burning candles unattended.
And always have functioning smoke detectors in your home.
Please, have a safe and joyous holiday !
